A senior U.S. State Department official said Ukraine is currently in a position of strength on the battlefield and has successfully shifted the momentum of the war in its favor, UATV English reports.
Speaking about the state of the conflict, Jeremy Lewin, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Foreign Assistance, Humanitarian Affairs and Religious Freedom, said Ukraine has entered a new phase of the war and is actively working to secure victory.
“Right now, we are in a position where Ukraine is winning the war at this moment,” Lewin said.
According to the State Department official, the dynamics of the battlefield have changed significantly compared to previous years. He noted that Ukrainian forces once viewed winter as a period of relative respite because Russian offensive operations typically slowed during colder months.
“Previously, Ukrainian forces would wait for winter because Russian offensives would pause. Now we are seeing the opposite situation — Ukrainians are on the offensive, while Russians are waiting for winter,” Lewin said.
He argued that Ukraine began shifting the momentum of the conflict during the previous winter through sustained attacks on military and strategic infrastructure inside Russia.
“Even during the winter, Ukrainians managed to change the dynamics by striking Russian infrastructure on Russian territory,” he said.
Lewin described the current period as a particularly important moment in the war, stressing that Ukraine has an opportunity to continue applying pressure on Russian forces.
“This is a very important moment. Ukraine can continue to exert pressure on the battlefield,” he added.
The senior U.S. official also noted that Washington is considering ending an existing sanctions exemption related to Russian oil and reaffirmed that the United States will continue coordinating sanctions policy with its European partners.
His remarks come amid reports that U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a more positive view of Ukraine’s battlefield performance. According to previous media reports, Trump told President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during last week’s G7 summit in France that he was impressed by Ukraine’s recent military successes.
