Ukraine will receive the first tranche of macro-financial assistance from the European Union’s €90 billion loan package during the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk on June 25–26.
According to a European official familiar with the process, who spoke on condition of anonymity to European Pravda, the first payment will amount to €3.2 billion.
“The provision of the first €3.2 billion tranche has been timed to coincide with the Recovery Conference, which will take place in Gdańsk on June 25–26,” the source said.
The official noted that the decision to provide the first tranche was approved last week.
A second tranche worth €5.9 billion, intended to support Ukraine’s armed forces, is also expected to be disbursed before the end of June, the official added.
As previously reported, Polish President Karol Nawrocki was not invited to the Ukraine Recovery Conference taking place this week in Gdansk.
On June 19, Nawrocki announced his decision to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, citing the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after heroes of the UPA and stating that Poland would not support EU membership for those who, in his view, fail to reject the “cult of totalitarianism and violence.”
Following that decision, a number of current and former Ukrainian officials announced plans to return their Polish state decorations. Questions were also raised about whether Zelenskyy would attend this year’s Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk.
The Ukrainian president later said that the decision to strip him of the award was linked to domestic political competition in Poland and the stoking of anti-Ukrainian sentiment.
