Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has welcomed the results of the parliamentary elections, in which his ruling Civil Contract party secured a decisive victory over its opponents, UATV English reports.
According to Armenia’s Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty service, Pashinyan said that through their vote, Armenians had “taken independence into their own hands, taken the future into their own hands, taken peace into their own hands, and taken the Republic of Armenia into their own hands.”
“And I must note that the three-headed party of war has been defeated,” he declared.
Throughout the election campaign, Pashinyan used the phrase “three-headed party of war” to describe opposition forces that, according to him, oppose his efforts to reach a peace agreement with Azerbaijan and seek to reverse existing agreements.
He argued that a return of those political forces to power could lead to a new armed conflict and jeopardize Armenia’s sovereignty.
“But this is an important result, though not the final one, because I believe the people have also clearly expressed their will: the three-headed party of war and the criminal-oligarchic system associated with it must be eradicated from the Republic of Armenia. This will be one of the most important tasks of the political majority and the government, and we must carry it out without delay, through very decisive and firm measures,” Pashinyan said during a joint meeting of parliamentary committees.
He also confirmed that Civil Contract will hold a parliamentary majority and form the next government.
According to the preliminary final count, Civil Contract won the parliamentary elections with 49.81% of the vote, securing a clear lead over its rivals.
