Ukraine marks Journalist Day on June 6, honoring media professionals for their contribution to informing society and defending the truth.
The holiday was officially established on May 25, 1994, by a decree signed by then-President Leonid Kravchuk following a proposal from delegates of the First All-Ukrainian Congress of Newspaper and Magazine Editors.
The date was chosen to commemorate June 6, 1992, when the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine became a member of the International Federation of Journalists.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, congratulated Ukrainian journalists on their professional holiday, highlighting the crucial role they play during wartime.
According to Syrskyi, the work of journalists has acquired particular significance under current circumstances, as they report from both the front line and the rear, documenting the realities of war and bringing the truth to audiences in Ukraine and abroad.
“You work where history is being made, telling the world about the events unfolding on the battlefield and behind the lines, about the courage of Ukrainian defenders, the resilience of our people, and the immense price Ukraine pays for its freedom and independence,” Syrskyi said.
He noted that journalists operate under dangerous conditions, documenting crimes committed during Russia’s aggression, countering disinformation, and helping the international community understand the true nature of the war. Many media professionals, he added, continue to carry out assignments in combat zones despite the risks to their lives and health.
The commander-in-chief expressed his gratitude to journalists for their professionalism, responsibility, and commitment to their work.
He also paid tribute to military journalists and press officers who ensure communication between the Armed Forces and Ukrainian society, emphasizing their important contribution to informing the public.
Syrskyi separately honored frontline correspondents and press officers who lost their lives during Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Concluding his message, he wished Ukrainian journalists good health, inspiration, professional achievements, and success in their work, expressing hope that their efforts would continue to serve the cause of truth and contribute to a just and victorious peace for Ukraine.
