Representatives of the United States and Iran have agreed to establish a two-week ceasefire, UATV English reports.
This was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif, whose country acted as a mediator in the negotiations.
Trump said he agreed to halt attacks on Iran after Tehran consented to the “full, immediate, and safe” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Araghchi stated that for two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be ensured in coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with “due consideration of technical limitations.”
According to Trump, Pakistan’s prime minister and army chief had urged him to “restrain the destructive force heading toward Iran.” Earlier, Trump had threatened to “return Iran to the Stone Age” and even “destroy its civilization” if it refused to make concessions.
The United States presented a 15-point plan to end the war, while Iran submitted its own 10-point plan. Trump said the proposals “are a workable basis for negotiations.”
“Almost all key points of past disputes have been agreed between the United States and Iran, but the two-week period will allow us to finalize and complete the agreement,” Trump wrote.
Sharif stated that the ceasefire takes effect immediately and applies everywhere, including Lebanon and other countries in the region. He also invited delegations to Islamabad on April 10 for further talks on a final agreement.
However, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran but emphasized that it does not extend to Lebanon, contradicting Pakistan’s statements.
“Israel supports U.S. efforts to ensure that Iran no longer poses a nuclear, missile, or terrorist threat to America, Israel, Iran’s Arab neighbors, and the entire world. The United States has told Israel it seeks to achieve these shared goals in future negotiations,” the statement said.
Donald Trump declared a “great day for peace” and highlighted the role of the United States in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. President said that Iran is ready for de-escalation and that the situation in the Middle East could stabilize.
“Iran wants this to happen — they are already tired of it! Just like everyone else!” the American leader stated.
Trump also said that the United States plans to help regulate shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, such steps could contribute to stability in the region and even open a “golden age of the Middle East.”
