The United States signaled it is prepared to impose additional economic sanctions on Russia and expand military support for Ukraine if the Kremlin refuses to agree to a ceasefire and engage in meaningful peace negotiations.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz delivered the message during meeting of the UN Security Council, UATV English reports.
“We can impose additional economic sanctions if Russia continues to ignore calls for a ceasefire, and we will continue providing weapons for Ukraine’s defense,” the U.S. representative said.
Waltz stressed that both sides must agree to a ceasefire, insisting that diplomacy remains the only path toward a durable and just peace.
The ambassador also drew attention to the ongoing issue of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, underscoring Washington’s commitment to pursuing all efforts aimed at ending the war.
“We call on all UN member states to join us in supporting these efforts, urging a ceasefire and an end to this war,” Waltz added.
Earlier, the UN Security Council convened to discuss Russia’s recent massive strikes on Ukraine and the humanitarian consequences of the war.
