U.S. President Donald Trump announced he had a “very good and productive” conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during which they discussed the Russia-Ukraine war, the situation in Syria, Gaza, and other issues.
In a statement on his social media, Trump said Erdoğan invited him to visit Turkey at a future date, and he, in turn, invited Erdoğan to Washington.
Trump noted that he had “great relations” with Erdoğan during his previous term, recalling that they had worked together to secure the release of detained American pastor Andrew Brunson.
“In any case, I look forward to working with President Erdoğan to end the senseless but deadly war between Russia and Ukraine—now!” Trump added.
Earlier, over the weekend, Trump admitted that reaching a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia might prove impossible.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently warned that Washington could withdraw from its mediating role if no progress is made toward peace.
