Finland to help Ukraine reform system of shelters

Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine Herman Smetanin and Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Finland Mari Rantanen signed a joint letter of intent that formalizes the agreements regarding the development of Ukraine’s civil defense shelter system.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Strategic Industries, according to Ukrinform.

It is emphasized that the signing of the joint letter of intent is the result of an agreement between the President of the Republic of Finland, Alexander Stubb, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which was reached by the heads of state on April 3, 2024.

The document outlines the creation of a Coalition of Shelters in the civil defense sector. The goal of the coalition will be to coordinate international efforts in this area to help ensure that the construction of civil defense shelters aligns with Ukraine’s national strategic goals.

“By establishing standards, exchanging best practices, and pooling resources, we aim to start building the most modern civil defense shelter system today, providing reliable protection for Ukraine’s civilian population from all threats,” the document states.

As reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with the First Lady, was on an official visit to Finland. The Ukrainian head of state held talks with the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, as well as with the Speaker of the Parliament, Jussi Halla-Aho, political group leaders, and heads of parliamentary committees.
