Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called for stronger sanctions and increased international pressure on Russia after a liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker bound for Ukraine was struck near Romania’s coast.
In a post on X, Sybiha said Russia’s war of aggression poses not only a threat to Ukraine but also to freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Black Sea, UATV English reports.
He described the attack on the LNG tanker Gas Lisbon, which was sailing toward Ukraine, as another example of Russia’s campaign of terror.
According to Sybiha, civilian crew members were injured in the strike, which also endangered commercial shipping and once again demonstrated that “the Kremlin has no respect for international maritime law or civilian lives.”
The foreign minister thanked Romania for its swift rescue operation, its continued solidarity with Ukraine and its clear understanding that Russia’s actions threaten the security of the entire Black Sea region.
Sybiha reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Romania and other regional partners to strengthen security in the Black Sea.
“The response must match the scale of the threat: stronger sanctions, greater pressure on Russia and full accountability for every act of aggression. The aggressor must be forced to end its war,” he said.
The comments came after Romanian President Nicușor Dan said a Liberia-flagged vessel traveling from Egypt to Ukraine had been struck near Romania’s coast in an attack believed to be linked to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
