President Petro Poroshenko congratulated servicemen of the Naval Forces on the Day of the Ukrainian Navy being celebrated today in the country.
“On behalf of Ukrainian people, I sincerely thank all the personnel of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces for their commitment to military duty, courage and heroism. I believe that by joint efforts, we will revive and multiply the sea glory of Ukraine, and the state flag on our ships will again reign in the bays of Ukrainian Sevastopol,” Poroshenko wrote on Facebook. “I wish all of us the determination and perseverance on our path to our great victory. Glory to the Military Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine!”
Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman also thanked the Navy.
“I thank the brave warriors who defend our maritime boundaries. Happy Day of the Naval Forces of Ukraine,” Groysman wrote on Facebook.
Day of the Ukrainian Navy is a professional holiday to honor the servicemen of the Ukrainian Naval Forces. Since 2015, it is celebrated on the first Sunday of July. From 2012-2015, Ukraine celebrated Navy Day on the same day as Russia, that is the last Sunday of July. In August 2014, Poroshenko said that Ukraine should not celebrate the holidays of the “military-historical calendar of Russia” but “we will honor the defenders of our homeland, not someone else’s.”
In 2015, Poroshenko signed a decree that moved Navy Day to every first Sunday of July.
