The CDU/CSU faction appealed to the Belarusian authorities to release DW journalist Paulyuk Bykowski.

This was announced on Aug. 9 by Elisabeth Motschmann, the CDU/CSU policy spokeperson on cultural and media affairs, DW reported.

“His detention contravenes the principles of freedom of the press. The grounds for his detention are unconvincing and disproportionate,” she said.

The members of the CDU/CSU faction are convinced that such actions by Belarus are part of a campaign against independent media.

Paulyuk Bykowski, Deutsche Welle journalist, was arrested on Wednesday in Minsk.

“The investigating committee came to me,” Bykowski wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday morning. A search team took away a computer, tablets, phones, pen drives, discs and bank cards from his apartment.

Earlier, the OSCE called on authorities to immediately release journalists detained in Belarus.
