According to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, the Bundestag Commissioner for the Armed Forces Hans-Peter Bartels, said that “he hopes German troops will participate in the upcoming United Nations’ peacekeeping mission in the Donbas” – if such a mission is ever to see daylight of course.
The Commissioner wishes to see Germany ‘take an active part’ in the event of a peacekeeping operation beginning under the auspices of the United Nations in the Donbass. The Bundestag Commissioner for the armed forces referred to an agreement between the conservatives of the CDU / CSU and the Social Democrats who wish to form a new “large coalition,” in which a probable UN peacekeeping mission in the Donbas is seen as an attractive peaceful way for the war-torn region.
The German Green party also supports this idea, which appears to gather much support among the German political elite.
The United Nations has published a report of the situation in the Donbas, and concluded that a peacekeeping mission would need to include around 20,000 peacekeepers and 4,000 police officers to be successful.
