Fresh Take on The Ukrainian National Anthem

Here the Ukrainian national anthem is performed by the Youth Symphonic Orchestra, which has been created only two years ago and features musicians from all over Ukraine and beyond. For example, the violinist Heorhiy Moroz is a student of the Singapore conservatory. He travelled over eight thousand kilometres to be a part of this recording session.

“Every year, selection is carried out in two stages. Then the orchestra is formed based on that. We also have a long reserve list of musicians, so we can substitute each other. Every musician under the age of 22 from any educational establishment can try their hand at this,” he said.

The Orchestra’s founder and conductor Oksana Lyniv became the first female conductor of one of Austria’s largest opera houses.

“I wanted to create a team that would unite the east and west of Ukraine. We have 75 members in the youth orchestra. They come from more than 25 different places: Dnipro, Severodonetsk, Crimea, Odesa, Kolomyya, Ternopil. We thought that playing the anthem is an event of great importance,” she said.

The honour to sing the anthem went to Mykhaylo Khoma, a pop musician known by his stage name Dzidzio. He hopes that this version will be selected to be played at the Euro 2020, before the games of the Ukrainian football team.

“This will be our gift for Ukraine. We will send our record to radio stations and education establishments. And I would really like it, and will do everything to make this happen, so that our version of the anthem is used to kindles the hearts of Ukrainians and lead them to victory. I sincerely believe that the Ukrainian team can win,” he said.

Ukrainians will hear a finished version of the newly recorded anthem in the early 2020.
