The chairmen of the foreign policy committees of the parliaments of seven European countries call on the United States to take the lead in countering Russian aggression.
This is stated in their appeal, the text of which was provided to Ukrinform by Oleksandr Merezhko, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation.
“We, the Chairmen of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the European Parliaments, call on President Trump and the U.S. Congress to demonstrate true leadership in confronting the global threat posed by Russia as an aggressor state. We call for an end to the policy of appeasement and urge instead a united, resolute stand against the Russian terrorist regime. We strongly warn against succumbing to its blackmail and deception,” the document says.
At the same time, the parliamentarians emphasized the need for strong leadership from all European countries, as well as strengthening transatlantic solidarity.
The politicians call on European countries to immediately confiscate Russia’s frozen assets and use them to support Ukraine.
The heads of parliamentary committees emphasize: “There can be no compromises and no external pressure on Ukraine regarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
They call on the United States and other NATO members to immediately admit Ukraine to the Alliance, and on EU member states to speed up Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
“We must not repeat the mistakes of Munich in 1938. Negotiations with the war criminal Putin are obviously useless. His main goal is to undermine and humiliate our ally, the United States,” the statement reads.
The parliamentarians also call on all states to ensure that Vladimir Putin and all those involved in his crimes are brought to justice.
“Lasting peace and security are impossible without accountability for the war crimes committed by his regime,” the European politicians said.
The appeal was signed by the heads of the relevant committees of the parliaments of Ukraine, the Czech Republic, France, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and the United Kingdom.
As reported earlier, The Wall Street Journal wrote that the United States is waiting for Kyiv’s response, in particular, regarding the recognition of Crimea as Russian and Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine does not legally recognize Russia’s occupation of Crimea, as it contradicts the Constitution.
