Day in Donbas: Militants kill Ukraine’s soldier, injure six

On February 22, Russia-backed militants performed 96 attacks against Ukraine’s positions and civil facilities. Joint Forces Operation press office reports it.

As a result of the attack, one Ukrainian serviceman was killed by shrapnel wounds, another was wounded in hospital, and five others received combat injuries.

Ukraine’s side specified that 81 militants’ shellings were performed from heavy weapons. In particular, the militants used multiple rocket launchers, tank weapons, 122 mm artillery systems, 120 mm and 82 mm mortars, grenade launchers of various systems, large-caliber machine guns, and small arms.

42 families were evacuated from the village of Vrubivka (Kyiv-controlled part of the Luhansk region), including 30 school-age children and 15 preschool children.

When Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized troops to cross Ukraine’s border into regions controlled by Russian-backed proxies, the U.S. initially stopped short of calling it an invasion. That changed on February 22, and key allies in Europe joined in saying Putin had crossed a red line.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” President Joe Biden said in his address.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg was equally explicit.

We saw last night that further Russian troops moved into the Donbas into parts of Donetsk and Luhansk. What we see now is that a country that is already invaded is suffering further invasion.”
