As of July 21, 2026, Ukraine has installed roughly 1.8 GW of distributed gas-fired generation capacity, according to Ukraine’s Energy Ministry, drawing on data from the regions and reported by UATV English.
The Kyiv region leads the country in gas-fired cogeneration installations, with more than 219 MW online. Other regions surpassing 100 MW include Cherkasy (129.3 MW), Dnipropetrovsk (118.2 MW), Volyn (113.6 MW), Ivano-Frankivsk (108.8 MW), Sumy (103.6 MW), and Zakarpattia (100.3 MW).
“Under the regional resilience plans, 388.8 MW of gas-fired generation capacity has been commissioned since March 2026. Construction work is ongoing on 247 units with a total capacity of 532.2 MW,” the ministry said.
Beyond gas-fired cogeneration, Ukraine continues expanding its renewable energy base, particularly wind and solar power. In the first half of 2026 alone, 414.8 MW of wind capacity came online across 70 facilities, bringing total installed wind capacity to 1.115 GW — with the largest concentrations in Mykolaiv region (over 400 MW) and Odesa region (over 200 MW).
According to grid operator Ukrenergo, total solar power capacity now stands at 7.3 GW, split between 5.4 GW from producers and 2.25 GW from active consumers. The biggest solar capacities are located in Dnipropetrovsk region (947 MW), Mykolaiv region (782 MW), and Odesa region (515 MW).
Energy storage technology is also advancing rapidly alongside this generation growth — over the past year, combined storage capacity has expanded more than 300-fold, now exceeding 600 MW. The ministry noted that storage systems offer an added tool for balancing the power grid and making better use of renewable energy, allowing excess solar power generated during the day to be fed back into the grid during evening or morning peak-demand periods.
As previously reported, Ukraine needs roughly €7 billion in investment over the coming years to build out new generation capacity. Ukrenergo Chairman Vitalii Zaichenko has said that by 2030, storage capacity is expected to grow to 1.5 GW, flexible gas-fired generation to 2.2 GW, solar generation to 10 GW, and wind generation to 3.6 GW.
