The unannounced visit of the presidents of Poland Andrzej Duda and Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda to Kyiv on the 27th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine is a signal of support for Ukraine, the Ukrainian people, and the head of state. This opinion was expressed today, June 28, on the air of the FREEDOM TV channel, by the diplomat, extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (2010-2017) Oleksandr Levchenko.
According to him, given the fact that Kyiv is bombarded by Russia with cruise and ballistic missiles almost every day, the arrival of the leaders was not particularly announced.
“We are waging a hard fight against an enemy who is not easy, and we must finish with him. Therefore, Constitution Day is a good event for us — the basic law of the country, by which our entire population lives,” said Levchenko.
In addition, the diplomat recalled, two years before the war, a political triangle called Lublinsky was created. These are Kyiv, Warsaw, Vilnius, i.e. Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania. It operates at the level of heads of state, ministers of foreign affairs, and at the level of parliament.
“That’s why it can be seen as a continuation of the dialogue within the Lublin Triangle, which exists and is active, and in fact, for us, Poland and Lithuania are one of the closest European allies and countries that support Ukraine in this difficult struggle,” he says.
Levchenko noted that, taking into account that both Poland and Lithuania are neighboring countries of the Russian Federation, they better than anyone else understand the danger of the Kremlin’s plans, Putin’s entourage and the Russian president himself.
“Therefore, Lithuania and Poland announced that at the next (in literally 2.5 weeks) NATO summit in Vilnius, they provide full support to Ukraine in obtaining guarantees in the period before NATO membership. And, on the other hand, they are sending a signal to other NATO members to more actively take a position of support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, where the level of support for joining NATO is somewhere around 85%, probably one of the highest, probably of all the countries that joined NATO in history.” , – says the diplomat.
The ambassador also gave an assessment of expectations from the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius. According to him, no EU country can afford something like Hungary. In fact, everyone understood that Budapest is an extended arm of Moscow, a continuation of the Kremlin’s policy on the territory of the European Union and NATO.
“This, of course, is very dangerous. This is completely unrelated to the policy of security and development of the foreign policy of the Alliance countries. That is why the discussion is already arising that it may not be necessary to make a decision on the accession of a certain country in full, as they have already started talking about it in the European Union. Because Hungary can block this whole thing due to its principled position of supporting Putin, whom it does not consider a criminal, Russia, which, well, is fighting somewhere, but is not a bloody aggressor,” he said.
Therefore, Levchenko clarified, Poland, which has historically had very good bilateral relations with Hungary within the Visegrad Group, has already drawn Budapest’s attention many times to the non-acceptance of such a position that does not correspond to the European vision of how the Alliance should develop and how it should expand .
“And the fact that blocking Ukraine is a factor that plays into Moscow’s hand. And in fact, Orban is a stooge of Vladimir Putin. Therefore, such visits to Kyiv by President Nauseda from Lithuania and Duda from Poland demonstrate support for Ukraine in this regard. The support group, which advocates Ukraine’s 100% accession to NATO, has already grown to 21 countries. So the work continues. There is some time before the summit, I think that a mutually agreeable solution will be found as to what the formula will be for Ukraine to join NATO,” Oleksandr Levchenko summarized.
