German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the Group of Seven summit in Évian marked the first time in a long period that the West had demonstrated unity on supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia, UATV English reports.

Speaking at Industry Day in Berlin, Merz said G7 leaders had reached a new consensus on Russia’s war against Ukraine, largely thanks to a coordinated European position.

“At the G7 summit held last week in Évian, France, we found a new consensus regarding Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. We closed ranks, not least because Europeans had acted decisively and with one voice beforehand,” Merz said.

According to the German chancellor, the common stance adopted by European allies was one of the key factors behind the agreements reached by G7 leaders.

“In this context, I can say more generally that what we once called the West demonstrated unity again in Évian for the first time in a long time,” he said.

Merz added that the current geopolitical environment requires Europe to assume greater responsibility and maintain stronger cohesion.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron said the G7 summit in Évian reflected a “very profound change” in the United States’ approach to supporting Ukraine, including Washington’s willingness to work with European allies on military assistance to Kyiv.
