Ukraine marked the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings with a message emphasizing unity in the face of aggression and drawing parallels between World War II and the current war against Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, UATV English reports.
In his address, Zelenskyy described the Allied landings in Normandy as one of the most significant moments of unity in human history, which accelerated the defeat of Nazi Germany.
“D-Day was one of the most important moments of unity among those defending life. Less than a year later, the desire of nations for freedom and hope for peace prevailed in May 1945,” he said.
The president stressed that Ukraine is striving for a similar outcome today in its fight against Russian aggression.
“We are working to ensure that this happens again,” Zelenskyy noted.
He also drew a direct comparison between Nazi Germany and modern Russia, pointing to continued Russian attacks as evidence that history is repeating itself.
“Even yesterday, another cynical order was heard from an army trying to destroy our freedom — to keep killing. History has seen this before,” he said.
Zelenskyy emphasized that even after D-Day, the Nazis did not abandon their plans, but in the end, freedom won.
“Freedom will prevail. Even in the darkest circumstances, people find the strength to unite to defend life,” he added.
The president thanked all those who are currently defending the values that triumphed in World War II, as well as those supporting Ukraine today.
“Thank you to everyone who protects life,” Zelenskyy said.
