Deputy Head of the Office of the President Ihor Zhovkva met with Ariella Vie, representative of NATO’s International Secretariat, UATV English reports, according to the Office of the President of Ukraine.
A key focus of the talks was the implementation of the PURL initiative. Zhovkva thanked NATO for coordinating the delivery of U.S. lethal assistance to Ukraine within the program.
“Partner contributions to cover Ukraine’s priority needs have already reached $2.82 billion. This has enabled the formation of five U.S. weapons packages to strengthen Ukraine’s defense,” the statement said.
The two sides agreed on steps needed to secure new contributions soon from NATO members and partners that have not yet joined PURL. They also discussed mechanisms to ensure contributions from Allied countries for next year.
Zhovkva emphasized the importance of investing in Ukraine’s defense industry:
“We have the necessary capacity to produce a wide range of weapons — and not only drones. But we lack sufficient funding.”
The PURL initiative has been operating since August based on agreements between the Presidents of Ukraine and the United States and the NATO Secretary General. Sixteen countries have already joined: the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Canada, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Iceland, Finland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Portugal, and Spain.
Earlier, Ukrainian officials noted expectations that Turkey may also join the initiative as one of the security guarantors.
