U.S. President Donald Trump said he will lift all tariffs on Chinese goods connected to fentanyl if Beijing tightens control over the export of the drug and the chemical substances used to produce it.
He said this aboard Air Force One, Bloomberg reports.
Trump said he discussed the issue with China’s leader Xi Jinping during their summit in South Korea.
“China is working very hard, and I really believe they have the motivation,” he said.
The American president added that during the meeting he agreed to cut in half the 20% tariff on fentanyl.
“As soon as we see that, we will lift the other 10%,” Trump said.
China and the United States are in a state of trade confrontation over restrictions affecting key sectors such as semiconductors and rare earth elements.
On October 30, Trump said he was satisfied with the results of his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, noting that they had managed to agree on “almost everything.”
