The U.S. and its allies have agreed that a potential trilateral summit involving the leaders of Ukraine, the United States, and Russia will take place in Europe, Sky News reports.
According to the channel, depending on the outcome of today’s meeting in Washington between Trump, Zelensky, and European leaders, American diplomats have asked their European counterparts to be ready for a trilateral meeting between Trump, Zelenskyy, and Putin by the end of this week.
The U.S. and its EU allies have agreed that the meeting will be held in Europe.
During a weekend videoconference of the “coalition of the willing,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed Rome as the venue, while French President Emmanuel Macron suggested Geneva.
Reportedly, Zelenskyy and Trump prefer Rome, specifically the Vatican, while Putin favors Geneva.
The foreign ministries of Italy and Switzerland have both insisted they are ready to host the talks, while EU diplomats are also considering other possible locations, including Budapest and Helsinki.
For context, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that if Russia refuses to agree to the trilateral meeting, new sanctions against Moscow will be necessary.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin claims that during the Putin-Trump meeting in Alaska, the possibility of a trilateral summit involving Ukraine was not discussed.
