The U.S. State Department has said that the United States will “change its approach” to trying to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine and plans to take a less active role, although it is not distancing itself from the issue.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said this at a briefing on May 1.

The initial question to the spokesperson concerned the possibility of imposing additional sanctions against those who help Russia, which Trump hinted at.

Tammy Bruce replied that Trump wants to act primarily through diplomacy, and “knows that there are more parts of the world, and the whole world needs to be given some attention.”

She recalled the words of Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the United States plans to “change the approach” to its attempts to bring the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war closer.

“The methodology of how we contribute to this will change, we will not be mediators. This is what I mentioned on Tuesday. The nature of how it’s going to change is that we’re still committed to this and we’re committed to doing and doing what we can,“ Bruce said, ”but we’re not going to be flying around the world at the drop of a hat and mediating meetings, it’s between the two sides now.

“And now is the time for them to present and develop concrete ideas on how to end this conflict. This will be their task,” the spokeswoman added.

As a reminder, on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington would abandon the “role of mediator” between Russia and Ukraine if there is no progress in achieving peace between them.

Before that, Rubio said that the current week would be “critical” for the US decision on whether to continue trying to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine.
