North Korea sent additional troops to Russia’s Kursk region. The exact number of the military contingent remains unknown.

Reuters, citing intelligence and South Korean media, reported this.

According to South Korean media, North Korea sent additional military units to combat zones in Russia’s Kursk region. In this region, Russian troops are engaged in battles with Ukrainian forces who crossed the border into the western part of Russia.

The South Korean publication JoongAng, citing multiple sources, reports that between January and February 2025, North Korea sent up to three thousand servicemen to Russia.

The transfer of troops was carried out by Russian cargo ships and military aircraft. Motorized rifle, engineering, and reconnaissance units arrived there, which had not previously participated in battles in the Kursk region.

On February 7, President Volodymyr Zelenskyу stated that Russian forces once again brought North Korean soldiers into the Kursk region, and there were new assaults in this direction. According to him, hundreds of Russian and North Korean soldiers were eliminated.

On February 11, ISW wrote that Russia was sending hundreds of its officers to North Korea, officially for rehabilitation, but their stay could be part of a program for training North Korean soldiers and exchanging combat experience.

On February 19, the representative of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), Vadym Skibitsky, stated that about a thousand North Korean army soldiers were undergoing training on new military equipment in Russia, increasing their combat effectiveness. According to him, North Korean troops are quickly mastering modern tactics and strategies, including working with drones.
