President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska today, May 18, on the Day of Remembrance of Victims of the Genocide of the Crimean Tatar People, honored the memory of all victims of this most brutal crime of Soviet authorities — the deportation of the Crimean Tatar people, UATV English reports.

“1944 will forever remain in history as an attempt to destroy an entire people — when both children and adults were thrown out of their native home and sent to a foreign land. A significant part of the people died on the way, while many others did not survive in places of exile — at least one-third, and this may be a very conservative estimate,” the President of Ukraine noted.

He emphasized that no nation deserves such a fate.

“We remember them. We have neither forgotten nor forgiven what happened. No nation deserves anything like this. And moreover, Russia did not stop with what it had already done and began a new war against Ukraine precisely from Crimea. And once again it is trying to deprive the Crimean Tatar people and all of us, all Ukrainians, of our home. We are defending ourselves against this, and as long as we stay united and help one another, we will definitely protect ourselves,” the President of Ukraine concluded.

As previously reported, on April 3 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, in implementation of a decree by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, granted the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People official legal status as a representative body.
