The United Nations General Assembly has launched a debate on the situation in Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territories, continuing the body’s annual review of Russia’s war and its consequences for international security.
Ukraine is represented at the session by Deputy Foreign Minister Maryana Betsa. More than 40 speakers are scheduled to address the Assembly, with discussions expected to last throughout the day. The meeting is being held in a debate format, without the adoption of formal resolutions.
Since 2018, the UNGA has annually included the issue of “The situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine” on its agenda. It has been debated on multiple occasions — in February of 2019–2022, in July 2023, and again on February 24, 2024.
The debate comes just days before the opening of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 9. The High-Level Week, when world leaders and top officials gather at UN headquarters, will run from September 23 to 29.
Betsa began her working visit to New York earlier this week. On September 3, she met with GA President Philemon Yang and UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo to discuss Ukraine-related issues ahead of the debates.
