Ukraine launches register of damages caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine

The Ministry of Justice has announced that a register to keep track of damages caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine will start operating soon.

The system will be presented at the Restoring Justice for Ukraine international conference in The Hague.

The conference will take place on April 2, and foreign ministers and justice ministers from countries that help Ukraine fight for justice for Ukraine since Russia’s invasion will attend the event to express their support.

“The main purpose of the Register is to record all evidences on the damages caused by war, so that Russia pays fair reparations. The second stage, will be opportunity for people to report on death of a close relatives, injuries, tortures etc as well as for business entities on losses,” wrote Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister for Digital Transformation of Ukraine.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the Register will span 40 categories of claims, including loss of life, torture and sexual violence, physical injury, forced displacement and resettlement of individuals, loss of property and income, other forms of economic losses, damage to critical infrastructure and other government assets, damage to historical and cultural heritage, environmental damage, etc.

The international Register of Damage is the first component of a global Compensation Mechanism, initiated by the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine in 2022 in cooperation with international partners.
