During the DSEI international defense exhibition in London, Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Rheinmetall AG CEO Armin Papperger, announcing a key step toward expanding joint weapons production.

Shmyhal said that on September 9, Ukraine allocated land in a secure region for the construction of a new Rheinmetall plant to produce artillery shells for the country’s Defense Forces.

He highlighted effective cooperation with the German defense giant across several areas, including ammunition production, armored vehicles, and air defense solutions.

The two also discussed projects to boost repair and production capabilities for armored equipment, noting that Rheinmetall’s newest models could further strengthen Ukraine’s defense forces.

Shmyhal added that joint work on air defense technologies is a priority, particularly systems to counter enemy drones, and thanked Rheinmetall for its ongoing support and large-scale joint projects.

The meeting was part of Shmyhal’s series of talks with leading defense companies during the DSEI exhibition in London.
