U.S. President Donald Trump, following a phone call with Vladimir Putin, said the two leaders would hold another meeting — this time in Budapest.
He wrote about it on Truth Social.
Trump expressed hope that “success in the Middle East will help us in negotiations to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.”
He added that he discussed with the Kremlin leader U.S. First Lady Melania Trump’s efforts to help return abducted Ukrainian children, as well as “trade between Russia and the United States after the end of the war with Ukraine.”
“At the end of the conversation, we agreed that a meeting of our senior advisors will take place next week. The first meetings on the U.S. side will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with other officials to be appointed later. The location of the talks has not yet been determined,” Trump wrote.
The U.S. president also said he would meet with Putin “at an agreed location — in Budapest, Hungary — to discuss the possibility of ending this ‘disgraceful’ war between Russia and Ukraine.”
“President Zelenskyy and I will meet tomorrow in the Oval Office to discuss my conversation with Putin and much more. I believe today’s call marked significant progress,” Trump concluded.
This was the first conversation between Trump and Putin in the past two months — since August 18, when several European leaders visited the White House following the Alaska summit.
A few days ago, Trump thanked Putin in a post after the Russian leader praised his peace efforts in a speech.
As reported, Trump is set to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on October 17, with one of the key topics being the potential delivery of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
