Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called on the Russian dictator to “freeze,” and then ultimately end, the war with Ukraine. He said this on July 25, during a meeting with Putin in Omsk, UATV English reports.
According to Kazakhstan’s president, he has already repeatedly received relevant signals regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine from the US and European countries.
“You know, in my view, and I’ve said this from the very start, this is an interstate conflict, not a civil war. We have always respected the Ukrainian people, their culture and language, and we believe the nature of this conflict isn’t fully understood by many, including us,” Tokayev noted.
Putin gave no direct response to Kazakhstan’s president’s proposal to end the war, promising only, as he put it, to “keep him informed” about the state of affairs.
However, that same evening, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the “freeze” option for the war against Ukraine proposed by Tokayev was unworkable, allegedly “because of Kyiv’s position.” According to him, Moscow’s main condition remains achieving its own goals, and hostilities could supposedly stop at any moment if the “Kyiv regime” accepted Russia’s terms.
As a reminder, Kazakhstan halted the shipment of raw materials through a sea terminal due to drone attacks on the infrastructure of Russia’s “Novorossiysk” port. About 80% of the country’s oil exports pass through this route, forcing the largest companies to already cut production.
