The European Union has welcomed Ukraine’s new government and expressed confidence that Kyiv will continue advancing reforms and its path toward EU membership following the recent cabinet reshuffle, UATV English reports.
Speaking at a press briefing in Brussels, European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said the EU wishes the new government success and looks forward to continuing close cooperation with its members.
Asked whether the reshuffle had been discussed during European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s recent visit to Kyiv, Pinho said the issue was mentioned only briefly in the context of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
“When it comes to appointments and changes within the government, we do not comment on those. What we can say is that we had excellent cooperation with Minister Fedorov at a crucial moment for defense policy, both for the EU and for Ukraine, and we greatly appreciated that cooperation,” she said.
European Commission spokesperson for Enlargement Guillaume Mercier said Brussels expects Ukraine’s new government to keep European integration at the center of its reform agenda.
“We look forward to continuing our cooperation with Ukraine. We are confident that the new government will place Ukraine’s European integration at the heart of the country’s transformation efforts,” Mercier said.
He noted that Ukraine has made significant progress under its reform program, particularly in the areas of the rule of law, energy and other key sectors of the economy.
“Our message is very clear: we will continue to support Ukraine on its path toward membership of the European Union,” Mercier added.
The comments come as the EU continues working with Kyiv on accession reforms while maintaining political, financial and military support amid Russia’s ongoing full-scale invasion.
