Carsten Breuer, Germany’s top military official and inspector general of the Bundeswehr, warned that Russia could be prepared to launch an attack against NATO territory by 2029 — or potentially even earlier.

In an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, Breuer said multiple indicators point toward a growing Russian military threat, UATV English reports.

“Rearmament, personnel growth, economic and political developments — all indicators converge around the year 2029,” Breuer stated.

Asked whether such a scenario could unfold sooner, the German general replied: “Yes.”

According to Breuer, the NATO alliance and European states must simultaneously focus on three strategic priorities.

“First, we need Fight Tonight capability — readiness for combat today. Second, we must build up our capabilities by 2029. Third, we need technological superiority through 2035 and beyond,” he said.

Breuer added that Germany’s updated military strategy and the Bundeswehr capability development plan are designed to achieve those goals.

The German military chief also stressed that European countries increasingly share the same assessment regarding the main threat to European security.

“We are united in the understanding that our problem is in Moscow and nowhere else,” he said.

The comments come amid intensified discussions inside NATO over defense spending, military readiness and long-term deterrence measures against Russia.

Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Berlin intends to make the Bundeswehr the strongest conventional army in Europe.
