Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on April 12 publicly acknowledged the defeat of his Fidesz party in the elections. Earlier, he had called and congratulated Péter Magyar, leader of the opposition Tisza Party, on winning the parliamentary elections, UATV English reports.
According to Orbán, the election results, although not final, are already clear and unambiguous.
“The election results are painful for us, but definite. The responsibility and the opportunity to govern the country were not given to us. I congratulated the winning party. I thank all of you for your tremendous work,” the Hungarian prime minister said at a post-election rally.
It is noted that after 66% of the votes were counted, the Tisza Party could secure 137 seats in parliament, while Fidesz may receive 55.
As a reminder, on April 12 Hungarians determined the new composition of parliament.
The main contenders for the post of prime minister — incumbent head of government Viktor Orbán and opposition leader Péter Magyar — both visited polling stations and cast their votes.
