Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said on Friday that several European countries are discussing their own proposals in response to the “peace plan” drafted by the United States for Ukraine. He made the remarks in an interview with NRK, as cited by, UATV English.
Støre, who is currently attending the G20 summit in South Africa, stated that the European countries present at the summit intend to put forward a joint European proposal addressing President Donald Trump’s plan for Ukraine.
“First of all, asking a country to give up territory it controls directly at the negotiating table is incompatible with Ukraine’s constitution,” the Norwegian Prime Minister said.
He added that the U.S. “peace plan” could nonetheless serve as a starting point for a ceasefire and further negotiations — something to which Ukraine has previously reacted positively.
“This opportunity must be used, but for that to happen Europeans need to come together and create a counterbalance in the areas where the proposal is unlikely to be acceptable,” Støre emphasized.
Earlier media reports indicated that European states were preparing an alternative proposal to the U.S. “peace plan.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also announced that European leaders will hold discussions on the situation in Ukraine on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
