July 7 has been named “Dnipro Day.” It’s a day to both to celebrate the river, which has played an important role throughout Ukrainian history, and a reminder to keep the cherished river clean.
The swimmers started on Trukhaniv island and from there swam to the other side of the river, to the 10th pier. Not far from the swimmers, to celebrate Dnipro Day, there were concerts playing along the riverport.
The first group of swimmers gathered at 9:30 a.m. to register and prepare for their 10:30 a.m. swim.
“At the registration for the swim, I was told that there were roughly 400 hundred people. And there were professional and amateur swimmers,” a representative of the State Water Resources Agency of Ukraine Elizaveta said.
With the sound of the first whistle, swimmers charged into the water. To keep track of everyone, the swimmers were separated into three groups. After swimmers from the first group swam across, the second group had their turn, and after the second, the third.
Some participants remarked that the swim was a bit of a challenge due to the low visibility and the length, but certainly not enough to keep them from making it all the way across.
Judging by the smiles on participants faces, it’s fair to say that the event was a success.
