Canada has intensified its sanctions on Russia by targeting an additional 100 ships from the Russian shadow fleet, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, UATV English reports.
“To strengthen our efforts to counter Russia’s sanctions evasion, Canada is adding 100 more vessels of the Russian shadow fleet to the sanctions list,” the statement read.
The Canadian government emphasized that these measures aim to reduce Russia’s ability to finance its war while avoiding unnecessary harm to ordinary people.
Foreign Minister Anita Anand said:
“Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to the sovereignty of Ukraine and its people. We are resolutely defending their rights against Putin’s harmful and aggressive actions. As long as Russia continues its aggression, Canada will continue to increase sanctions pressure in coordination with allies and partners.”
Previously, Canada had already imposed sanctions on 21 individuals, 53 entities, and 100 vessels from Russia’s shadow fleet. The country also lowered the price cap on Russian crude oil from $47.6 to $44.1 per barrel.
In total, Canadian sanctions related to the violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty now target over 3,400 individuals and entities, including more than 600 shadow fleet vessels.
