Today (Oct. 10), “The Rising Hawk” was released in Ukrainian cinemas.
The film tells the story of Ukrainians fighting against the Mongol-Tatar horde for their independence.
“‘Freedom’ for me personally, contains a lot. ‘Freedom’ is both freedom of choice and understanding that your freedom ends where the freedom of other people begins. It is freedom of expressing your thoughts and dreams and not being afraid to get killed for that,” Director Akhtem Seitablaev said.
Seitablaev and co-director John Winn brought an international cast – including the main role – Zakhar Berkut – played by Robert Patrick (who is perhaps best known for playing T-1000 in the movie “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”) to Ukraine’s Zakarpattia and Kyiv regions for filming the $5 million film.
A third of the film’s budget was donated by the state, another third, by Ukrainian producers, and the last third, by American co-producers.

“Our colleagues from over the ocean…There was no feeling that this is Hollywood. They are workaholics. Both young and titans of the movie industry. There was no language barrier. There was only the feeling of brotherhood in acting because we know what are we working for and why are we doing it,” actor Oleh Voloshchenko said.
This joint production is also intended to demonstrate the culture and history of Ukraine to foreign audiences.
“This is another chance to show what we are internationally oriented. The genre is very complicated. And because this is an adaptation – this is a big win on the part of the directors who took up this complicated job. I believe this will really be an action movie. And that the screening will captivate both Ukrainian and foreign audiences,” viewer Svitlana Makogonska said.
Other countries have already shown interest in the movie “The Rising Hawk” including the USA, Spain, France, Italy, South Korea, Japan, India, and Moldova. They have already purchased licenses to show it in their cinemas.
