Algeria will increase imports of Ukrainian grain, for this the country will bring its tender requirements closer to grain imports and generally accepted market standards.
UA reports this with reference to the Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA).
Ukrainian Grain Association conducted an online meeting with representatives of the government and specialized associations of the Algerian People’s Democratic Republic with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ukrainian Embassy in Algeria. Representatives of Algeria said that the country intends to increase the volume of grain imports due to changes in climatic conditions. Therefore, Ukraine can become a major partner of Algeria in the grain trade.
“Today, Algeria has set tender requirements for wheat imports at a level that the Black Sea region cannot actually meet. That is why Ukraine exports a very small amount of grain to Algeria. In the last 2020/2021 grain season, Ukraine exported only a little more than 200,000 tons of grain to Algeria” – UGA reports.
The fact is that there is not enough grain in Ukraine, which meets the restrictions set by Algeria for the maintenance of insect-damaged grains at 0.5%. Increasing this figure to 1%, as stated in most North African wheat-importing countries, could significantly increase supply to Algeria from Ukraine. For example, for Morocco and Egypt this figure is limited to 1%, and for Tunisia it is not limited at all.
The Ukrainian Grain Association President Mykola Horbachev presented to the Algerian side the potential and opportunities of Ukraine for grain production and export, and noted that bilateral grain trade can be significantly improved if the Algerian side brings its tender requirements for grain imports closer to generally accepted market standards.
According to the association, the Algerian side agreed to discuss possible changes in tender procedures following the results of the summit, the parties agreed to hold a separate meeting to discuss and deepen cooperation and grain trade.
Last month the UGA estimated the export volumes of grains (wheat, corn and barley) of Ukraine in the 2021/2022 marketing year at 57,500,000 tons, which is 28.8% bigger than the results of 2020/2021.
Moreover, as of July 21, Ukraine exported grains and legumes in the 2021/2022 marketing year by 1,185,000 tons, which is 71,000 tons more than in the same period last year.
Earlier, Ukraine and Turkey agreed on a certificate for the export of dairy products.
