The U.S. Senate has reached a bipartisan agreement on legislation that would pave the way for new sanctions against Russia and Iran, including measures targeting the world’s largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas, Bloomberg reported.
A procedural vote on the bill is scheduled for July 28.
According to Bloomberg, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for the legislation, which was previously championed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
The bill would authorize the president to impose tariffs on the five largest importers of Russian crude oil and natural gas. It would also allow sanctions against five countries that Washington determines are helping Russia circumvent existing energy restrictions.
In addition to expanding pressure on Russia, the legislation includes new sanctions measures targeting Iran.
Bloomberg noted that the proposal could complicate U.S. trade relations with China and India, which remain the largest purchasers of Russian energy exports.
