Britain’s new Defense Secretary Wes Streeting is convinced that Europe will yet thank US President Donald Trump for forcing it to “stand on its own feet” when it comes to defense spending.
He said this on Sky News, UATV English reports.
“One of the things I’d say about President Trump is that we don’t always like what he says. We don’t always like his methods [of working — ed.]. But I honestly believe that… Europe will yet thank President Trump for shaking us out of our complacency, for making us ‘stand on our own feet,’ and for putting an end to a period of excessive dependence on the United States in the field of defense,” Streeting noted.
According to him, what the head of the White House said about Europe isn’t unique to President Trump himself, the MAGA movement, or the US Republican Party.
“This was a long-standing US frustration with Europe under both Democratic and Republican presidents. And in the world we live in, it’s right that we’re able to act for our own security,” the official noted.
Asked whether he trusts Trump, the defense secretary replied: “I don’t know him, but I trust the United States.”
“In just my first week as defense secretary, I’ve gained unique insight into just how close and integrated the relationship between the United Kingdom and the US is in defense and security,” Streeting added.
As previously reported, earlier this week former Health Secretary Wes Streeting became Defense Secretary in the government led by Andy Burnham.
