Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha welcomed a public call by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war, while noting that the Kremlin has already dismissed the appeal, UATV English reports.
Writing on social media, Sybiha praised Tokayev’s intervention as timely and grounded in reality.
“We appreciate President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s calls on Putin that the time has come to stop the war. A realistic, timely, and wise appeal,” Sybiha said.
The Ukrainian foreign minister said Kyiv has proposed halting the war along the current front line and shifting to diplomacy, but that Moscow continues to reject this clear path to peace.
“Putin’s spokesman has already rejected the Kazakh president’s proposal as well. The bottom line is this: Moscow must feel greater pressure before it agrees to realistic peace proposals,” Sybiha said.
As previously reported, Tokayev raised the proposal during a meeting with Putin in Omsk, suggesting the war be frozen and negotiations return to the framework discussed in Istanbul in 2022, under guarantees from major powers including Russia.
“Perhaps this conflict should already be frozen and we should return to the Istanbul formula 2.0, since significant progress was made there,” Tokayev said, adding that the goal should be moving toward a long-awaited peace under guarantees from major powers, including Russia.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected the idea shortly after, saying a freeze of the war “is not possible.”
