President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes his American counterpart Donald Trump understands that it is Russia that is not interested in ending the war.
He said this in an interview with American far-right blogger and close supporter of the US president, Laura Loomer, UATV English reports.
“The president has understood who really doesn’t want to stop the war. Or rather, differently: he has understood that we want to stop Putin, he has understood that we truly want peace. Because before, there were voices saying that Ukraine doesn’t want to stop,” Zelenskyy noted.
Of course, according to him, Ukraine wants victory.
“But above all, we’re focused on human lives. If tomorrow we could stop the war, have a ceasefire, that’s better than fighting for 10-20 years for the sake of victory and losing our people. A ceasefire is the better alternative,” the president stated.
“I think President Trump has started to trust me, and that’s key, when it comes to the change in tone,” he added.
Zelenskyy also said that the turning point in his relationship with US President Donald Trump was a brief personal meeting at the Vatican, which took place at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome in April 2025.
On Friday, it became known that the meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy will take place on Tuesday, July 28, in Washington.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy supports his American counterpart Donald Trump’s idea of including provisions on sanctions against Iran in the bill on sanctions against Russia, proposed by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
Zelenskyy noted that the late Senator Lindsey Graham had worked for a long time on the bill for new sanctions.
“Lindsey [Graham] was deeply involved in this bill. I think President Trump’s idea to combine this with sanctions against Iran — we support this idea. It’s a very good idea,” he said.
In the president’s view, this could unite different people in Congress around the bill, since some might support anti-Iran sanctions, and others anti-Russia sanctions.
As a reminder, US President Donald Trump again called on Congress to include provisions on Iran in the bipartisan bill on sanctions against Russia, one of whose co-authors was the late Senator Lindsey Graham — citing that he had supposedly wanted this.
Trump had previously expressed a wish for Iran-related provisions to be added to the bill. At the same time, he signaled he was ready to sign it.
In the Senate, there were calls for swift consideration of the bill without additional changes. According to media reports, it already has the support of more than 60 senators, which guarantees its passage.
The Senate had earlier disclosed details of the updated version of the bill.
