Russia could use soldiers without insignia to stage provocations in the Baltic states in an attempt to test NATO’s response, Head of Poland’s Foreign Intelligence Agency Paweł Szota said in an interview with Rzeczpospolita.

Szota warned that Russia remains the primary military threat to Poland, adding that Moscow views Poland and NATO’s eastern flank as obstacles to achieving its imperial ambitions.

“Russia is systematically pushing the ‘red lines,’ testing NATO’s response. The cost of such provocations for Moscow is low, while the Alliance mainly responds at the political level, encouraging further escalation,” he said.

According to Szota, Polish intelligence is considering scenarios involving Russian provocations against the Baltic states, including operations carried out by Russian soldiers without identifying insignia.

He also described Russia’s war against Ukraine as “a huge humiliation” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that “we are dealing with unpredictability on Russia’s part.”

Earlier, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also warned that Russia could stage provocations targeting NATO member states.
