President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had tried to draw U.S. attention to Russia’s assistance to Iran in the war, but this proved ineffective due to Washington’s position, UATV English informs.
He made the remarks in a podcast by Alastair Campbell, The Rest Is Politics, as reported by The Guardian.
According to Zelenskyy, the United States ignored convincing evidence that Russia was helping Iran carry out attacks on U.S. bases in the Middle East because Washington “trusts” Putin.
Zelenskyy said Russian military satellites photographed critical energy infrastructure in countries of the Persian Gulf and in Israel, as well as the locations of U.S. military bases across the region, and passed this data to Iran for further attacks.
“I said this publicly. Did we hear any reaction from the U.S. telling Russia to stop? The problem is that they trust Putin. And that is unfortunate,” Zelenskyy said.
He also commented on the trilateral negotiation process to end the war in Ukraine, stating that the team of U.S. President Donald Trump failed to fully understand Russia’s intentions.
According to Zelenskyy, two of Trump’s negotiators — Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner — “spent too much time” with Putin and his senior officials.
U.S. envoys visited Moscow five times and did not visit Kyiv once.
Zelenskyy said he understands Putin’s psychology and real military goals better than the White House, adding that the Kremlin leader would not stop at controlling Donbas and could next attempt to seize regional centers such as Dnipro and Kharkiv.
“We must acknowledge that some in the U.S. believe that [Donbas] means nothing to us,” he added.
On April 6, Zelenskyy also said that “substantive” work is ongoing with the United States on documents being prepared within negotiations to end the war.
Earlier, Kyrylo Budanov said he expects a possible visit of a U.S. delegation to Kyiv after Easter.
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President JD Vance recently stated that he considers bargaining between Ukraine and Russia over “a few square kilometers” to be inappropriate.
