Over four years of full-scale war, Russia has carried out 5,796 attacks against Ukraine’s energy system, UATV English reports.

This was reported by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.

“5,796 attacks have been carried out by the enemy against our energy system. And after every shelling, energy workers returned to their shifts to repair everything as quickly as possible and restore electricity and heat to Ukrainian families — despite the мороз and ongoing attacks,” he wrote on Telegram.

“Unfortunately, 247 energy workers were killed in the line of duty. They fought for light,” Shmyhal said.

He noted that in order to break the Ukrainian people, Russia launched terror against civilians, with the energy sector becoming one of the primary targets from the very beginning of the invasion.

According to the minister, “the enemy planned to plunge us into darkness and cold, but underestimated the professionalism of Ukrainian energy workers.”

Earlier, it was reported that the total need for restoration and modernization of the energy sector over the next ten years amounts to $90.6 billion. Of that sum, $71 billion (almost 80%) is required for the restoration and modernization of generation capacity.
