U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had asked for an exception from sanctions related to the purchase of Russian oil — but the request was denied.

The statement came as Trump spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday, according to the White House, cited by Ukrinform.

“He asked for an exemption. We didn’t grant it, but he did ask,”
Trump said, responding to journalists’ questions on the matter.

The U.S. president also added that Orbán is his friend.

Earlier, Orbán said that Hungary is seeking ways to bypass U.S. sanctions targeting Russian oil companies.

As reported, the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office announced that Donald Trump will host Viktor Orbán at the White House on November 7.
