EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Maternova said that discussions are currently taking place among European leaders on how to bypass Hungary’s veto blocking Ukraine’s further progress toward EU membership, while Denmark holds the rotating presidency.
In this context, Maternova emphasized that EU leaders are trying to “move the process forward.”
“Ultimately, unanimity will still be required, but that should not stop the reforms… A lot of work can be done without a formal vote,” she added.
Commenting on the possibility of “changing the rules” to advance accession talks with Ukraine, the ambassador noted that “what is enshrined in the treaties cannot be changed.”
“Other things—like internal rules—can be adjusted. And there is room for maneuver here, which we are currently using, hoping to make the most of Denmark’s presidency,” she said.
As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier stated that Ukraine will become a member of the European Union regardless of the position of Hungary’s prime minister.
Meanwhile, Orban recently reiterated that Hungarians do not want to be in the same union with Ukrainians so as “not to share their fate”—and, according to him, the fate of Ukrainians is to be alongside Russia. The Hungarian prime minister also claimed that Ukraine is not a sovereign state, since its expenses are covered by the European Union.
