Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stressed that Russia’s war against Ukraine endangers both regional and global security and urged renewed efforts to resume peace talks.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Rome with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Fidan underlined Turkey’s consistent warnings about the risk of the conflict spreading beyond Ukraine.
“From the very beginning of the Russia–Ukraine war, Turkey has consistently warned about the risk of escalation and the urgent need to end this war. More efforts are needed for its swift conclusion,” Fidan said.
Call to Restart Peace Talks
The minister recalled that Turkey facilitated earlier negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, which included discussions on a ceasefire and led to prisoner exchanges. He confirmed that Ankara will continue its initiatives to promote dialogue at various levels.
“Peace negotiations and talks on a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine must resume from where they left off… As Turkey and Italy, we share the view that this war must end without delay,” he stated.
Security Concerns and NATO’s Role
Fidan emphasized that the war threatens not only regional stability but also global security, noting that NATO member states are fulfilling their obligations and holding consultations.
He also expressed hope that Russia’s recent violation of Polish airspace would not be repeated.
Turkey has repeatedly declared its support for a durable and just peace in Ukraine and remains ready to contribute to achieving it, Fidan concluded.
