Russian President Vladimir Putin’s participation in the Alaska meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump was nothing more than a hypocritical attempt to avoid new sanctions, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna told Ukrinform.
He stressed that Russia’s missile strike on Kyiv on August 28 was a deliberate attack on civilians.
“It was a deliberate assault by Putin on civilians. At a time when Europe and the U.S., together with Ukraine, are making efforts to end the war and reach lasting peace, Putin clearly shows he has not abandoned his goals and continues committing war crimes and killing civilians, including children,” Tsahkna said.
The Estonian foreign minister emphasized that the youngest victim of the attack in Kyiv was just two years old, casting doubt on Russia’s commitment to peace.
“Obviously, peace is not achieved with 31 missiles and 598 strike drones,” he underscored.
Tallinn’s Foreign Ministry also summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires on August 28 to hand over a note of protest regarding the large-scale deadly missile and drone attacks on Kyiv.
Earlier, Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said that the best security guarantee for Ukraine would be NATO membership.
