UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed during a phone call on Thursday that Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin must sit down for talks and agree to an unconditional ceasefire to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
As reported by Ukrinform, this was announced on the official website of the UK government.
“President Zelensky began the call by thanking the Prime Minister for the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine, including the sanctions announced earlier this week aimed at cutting Russia’s energy revenues, which are vital to halting Putin’s war machine. The leaders agreed that international partners must continue increasing pressure on Russia,” the statement reads.
During the conversation, Prime Minister Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s steadfast support for Ukraine, and both leaders agreed on the importance of maintaining strong and independent anti-corruption institutions at the heart of Ukrainian democracy.
“Both leaders emphasized that Putin must come to the negotiating table and agree to an unconditional ceasefire in order to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” the press release says.
Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that the UK might join the U.S. in supplying weapons to Ukraine.
As noted earlier, President Zelensky also discussed with Prime Minister Starmer the preparation of legislation aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s law enforcement system and ensuring the independence and effectiveness of its anti-corruption infrastructure.
